Boho Global Inspiration For My New Orleans Shotgun

I have been thinking a lot about what direction I'm going to go in with my decorating in my new Creole Cottage shotgun rental in New Orleans.

I have a red velvet couch that I'm taking my inspiration from.

It has beautiful original hardwood floors so some oriental rugs are in order.

I'm seeing rich colors and textures. Dark woods and shiny black accents. As always- global fabrics, and maybe some damask (it is New Orleans after all). Think glamorous bohemian.

I think I will paint the walls with earthy and organic tones, but light ones.

It also has Very high ceilings and large windows so there will be plenty of light to keep it fresh.

Mood lighting and lamps are also on my search list to create a cozy and entertaining friendly vibe.

Patchwork Furniture

I've always had a thing for beautiful bits of fabric. I have piles of colorful, global, vintage bits that I've picked up at thrift stores over the years. I seldom have a use for them but just can't leave them behind either. Re-upholstering a piece of  outdated furniture is the perfect thing to use them for. I doubt I could quite manage doing a sofa or chair just yet, but I do have a footstool that I think I will start out with. I have more projects lined up then I can get to at the moment and for the next 2 weeks I will be getting ready for my move to New Orleans but when I get settled I promise to post some before and after pics of my furniture re-vamps.

Living Walls

I've always wanted a living wall-in my bathroom specifically. There is something invigorating about bathing outdoors...if only I could bring that feeling indoors. It would be like being a water nymph in a fairy tale every time you took a shower. Living walls are suddenly becoming quite popular so maybe my living bathroom isn't too far off.

I've always had a lot of plants both inside and out. Plants make me feel relaxed and happy, not to mention they suck up pollution and replace it with fresher air. How wonderful it would be if places like malls, doctor offices and traffic choked city streets were lined with living walls. We would all be a little happier and healthier no doubt!

Must Love New Orleans

I haven't had much time to post in the last week or so since I was apartment hunting in New Orleans. It was both a mind bogglingly stressful trip and beautiful and inspiring trip all at the same time. Stressful, because apparently Everyone else was in the city looking for apartments at the same time, and since Hurricane Katrina there are very few places to choose from. So we searched desperately for 5 days and finally found a perfect shotgun with our name on it, right before we had to fly back to Houston. I can't complain though, it was 5 days of driving around and looking at some of the most fabulous homes and neighborhoods in the world...

Here is a picture of our little Creole Cottage. It has beautiful historical details, wood floors, soaring ceilings and a vintage bathroom. I can't wait to share my journey decorating our new space with ya'll. Stay tuned!

All photographs taken by moi! There will be many, many more pictures of my New Orleans wanderings to come....

Something with plenty of color and texture...
Of course with a bohemian vibe...
Some luxury...
Ethereal is always good...

It's Funny How Things Turn Out

Funny story- I evacuated from my Home in New Orleans in 2005 because of Hurricane Katrina. Then I ended up in Houston, Texas. At the time I thought- what could be worse? I longed every day to return to my beloved New Orleans. Houston to me was a HUGE, traffic choked, non artistic, rat race of a city. And I felt that way for the first 4 or 5 years that I have lived here. But lately I have begun to have a change of heart. I kinda like it here, in fact I'm pretty sure I DO like it here. Bloom where you're planted you know? For years I have madly searched out sources of inspiration here, and surprisingly found quite a bit. There's a whole list of things I have grown to love about living here ( that's another story). Not to mention my family is here. So what's the problem? No problem, just that it turns out my boyfriend got a job offer in New Orleans. Then he got the job, In New Orleans. Now we are moving, TO New Orleans, in 3 weeks. Don't get me wrong there is no place I would rather live it's just that I didn't imagine it would happen in the next 20 years. It's funny how things turn out.

So here I am now...sending inspiration your way from the Beautiful city of New Orleans! If you have the chance you should come and visit this truly amazing city and if not-
come back and live vicariously through me:) xoxo-Andrea
